A quick look at Greater-Sage Grouse

The greater sage grouse can be “up to 30 inches long and two feet tall, weighing from two to seven pounds”, say the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) - a federal government agency helping in the conservation of the greater sage-grouse.

The diets of these ground-dwelling birds, and cover, consists mainly of sagebrush. However, as a result of “overhunting, habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation” the species is on a decline. Estimates showed historical populations to be 1.6 million to 16 million greater sage-grouse. By 2000 the FWS estimated that number to be between 100,000 and 500,000.

About Georg Ohm

Georg Ohm is a German physicist and is known for his research on electrical currents and discovering Ohm’s Law. He was born in Erlangen, Germany on 16 March 1789 and went to Erlangen University. He lived his life as a Professor at the University of Munich and as the director at the Polytechnic Institute of Nuremberg.  He died during 1854 in Germany at the age of 65.

The discovery of Ohm’s Law

During 1825 to 1826, Georg Ohm did research and work on resistance and electricity and by 1827 he had published the results in a book. The book contained theory of current electricity, although it was published in 1827 it did not gain acceptance until the 1840’s.

Formula

The Formula for Ohm’s Law is V= I x R. The formula can also be rearranged to  I= V / R and R= V / I. In the formula:

  • V = Voltage

  • I = Current

  • R = Resistance

Ohm’s Law tells us that when the current and resistance is increased then the voltage increases; the voltage is equal to the current multiplied by the resistance in circuits.

Uses of Ohm’s Law

Ohm’s Law can be used when designing circuits when you only know two of the variables in the equation (see above). Ohm’s Law can also be used to find the voltage, current and resistance at any point in a circuit.
